Margaret River’s VIP Wine Tasting Experience

Our tiny patch of vines in the southern part of Margaret River is very much off the beaten track. There’s no cellar door and it’s very much a labour of love; pruning, picking and harvesting and then bottling our tiny parcels of Flowstone wines on site. It’s isolated, being 17km south of the Margaret River township, but I truly enjoy the serenity that this spectacular location provides.

It’s quite a stark contrast to many of the operations of my wine industry colleagues in the region. There’s no denying that the tourism landscape in Margaret River is diverse with lots for wine lovers to discover when they visit. Bigger brands like Leeuwin Estate, Vasse Felix, Howard Park or Voyager Estate are often top of the list of cellar doors to visit when guests come to the region, but there’s also a different more intimate experience that can be enjoyed via private tastings.

You may not be aware that I love hosting fans of Flowstone in my special part of the world. It’s an exclusive VIP feature that my wine club members particularly enjoy, and some of my international customers like Wine Tourism in Sweden also send their wine loving customers our way. International Wine Tourism certainly has a unique audience (particularly pre-COVID19), with wine lovers around the world making a pilgrimage to taste some of our most famous wines and see the vineyards for themselves.

If you are a wine lover who is looking for something slightly different, many of the private appointments are very much a behind the scenes glimpse into the winery operations. An intimate chance to sit down, often with the owner and get to know the process, philosophy and taste your way through the wines. There are a number of wineries in the Margaret River region with no cellar doors who also host private tastings by appointment including:

Grace Farm – Held on the deck of the farmhouse in the company of their viticulturist Tim Quinlan or in some cases winemaker Jonathan Mettam.

Cloudburst – Meet Will Berliner and get a sense of his  famous Cabernets. A fellow winemaker making miniscule quantities in a biodynamic style. There’s certainly global acclaim for some of these wines.

Si Vintners – A winemaker with a natural approach to viticulture with a slightly different approach to some of the more traditional brands.
