Flowstone
The natural flow of creativity captured over time
Our vineyard is located at the edge of the Margaret River Plateau and the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge. These adjacent yet contrasting landforms share the ancient and impermeable Leeuwin Block granite basement rock, influencing water flows in the limestone ridge caves and the plateau’s deep gravel soils. These water flows are essential for creating the crystalline formations in the caves and for the sustainability of the vines growing in the plateau’s soils. In the hidden scenery of the limestone cave and the vineyard landscape, the formations of flowstone and wine reflect simplicity in their physical expression while concealing a complex process unique to the place.
The centrepiece of our story and wines is the Flowstone vineyard in the Forest Grove area, 17 km south of Margaret River. Here, we cultivate Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Touriga, and Gewurztraminer. Additionally, in our satellite vineyards, we grow Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in Karridale, while more Chardonnay is produced in Wilyabrup.
About the Margaret River Wine Region
Nestled in one of the world’s most isolated wine regions, these vineyards thrive thanks to the unique maritime influence of the Indian Ocean, consistently producing benchmark wines of exceptional quality. Summertime southerly winds, coupled with the cooling Leeuwin current, create ideal growing conditions. The vines root in ancient soils, weathered over 2000 million years from an ancient landmass, primarily composed of decomposed granite forming undulating, well-drained ironstone gravel soils with underlying clay—perfect for viticulture. Most vineyards sit within a mere 3-7 kilometers of the coast, at elevations between 80 and 120 meters. The region’s wine-growing potential was first recognized in the mid-1960s by agricultural scientist Dr. John Gladstone.
